Learning Beyond the Classroom
Field Trips (JK to Grade 6)
At The Laurel School, we believe some of the most meaningful learning happens when students step beyond the classroom.
Our thoughtfully planned field trips and hands-on activities give students opportunities to explore the world around them going on three to five field trips per school year, make meaningful connections to what they are learning, and experience new environments, ideas, and challenges firsthand.
From museums, science centres, farms, aquariums, theatres, cultural institutions, and interactive learning spaces to animal encounters, nature-based learning, science experiences, career exploration, entrepreneurship, and school-wide celebrations, student life at Laurel is designed to be engaging and memorable.
We are able to create enriching experiences that complement our students' learning and encourage them to ask questions, think critically, collaborate with others, and see how their education connects to the real world.
Because learning isn't just about what happens at a desk—it's about the experiences that help shape curious, confident, and capable individuals for the world around them.
Activities
Throughout the school year, our students take part in engaging hands-on activities that encourage them to explore, ask questions, create, collaborate, and connect their learning to the world around them. From meeting animals and learning about nature to participating in science workshops, career exploration, entrepreneurship, public speaking, and community-building experiences, there is always something new to discover.
Students may take part in experiences such as:
Honeybee education and nature-based learning
Hands-on animal visits and encounters
Hatch the Chick Experience — Students experience the full life cycle firsthand, from caring for fertilized eggs in an incubator and watching chicks hatch to learning how to gently care for and support the baby chicks as they grow.
Walking trips to local parks and community spaces to explore nature
Interactive virtual workshops with educators from organizations such as the Ontario Science Centre and Royal Ontario Museum
Career fairs featuring parents and community professionals
Science fairs and inquiry-based projects (Elementary)
Student entrepreneurship and marketplace experiences (Elementary)
Talent shows and public speaking opportunities (JK to Grade 6)
Kindness Days, community-building initiatives, and service learning
Movie nights, theme days, fun fairs, and special school celebrations
